Opa-locka is a north Miami-Dade County city of only four-square miles and 17,000 people, and has the largest collection of Moorish architecture in the Western hemisphere. The city was incorporated in 1926 as an “Arabian Fantasy” based on the book “1001 Arabian Tales”. Developer Glen Curtiss built 105 buildings with an array of domes, minarets and outside staircases between 1925-28.

Opa-locka has a large general aviation airport, three  parks, two lakes, and some of the most unique buildings in the country. Although the name of the city - Opa-locka - sounds Arabic, it is a contraction of the Native American name for the area, “Opa-tisha-woka-locka,” meaning a dry place in the swamp with trees.
